Taking a Closer Look at the Dell Streak 7 Wi-Fi Tablet

June 1, 2011 | Author: | Posted in Computers and Technology

The first iPad was received with skepticism; people thought that their laptops covered the same bases more than adequately. However, the true purpose of the iPad started to become more obvious. It wasn’t long before all the major suppliers of cell phones and computers wanted in on on the fast-growing action. Tablets began popping up all over the place. Naturally, Dell wants a piece of the pie. That is the very reason they created the Dell Streak 7 Wi-Fi Tablet. Whether this tablet makes the grade and is worth the money is what we are going to try to answer in this article.

The first downside to this Dell tablet is the company that is making it. Dell isn’t really known for creating good and reliable products. And as for the company’s customer service: well, let’s simply put it this way: if Dell owned a prize closet, it would not be overloaded with consumer awards. From customer feedback, it appears that as soon as your warranty expires, you are going to incur a charge for contacting customer support. And so, while this device is in all likelihood going to be one of the more easily affordable tablets sold on the market, you must take a moment to think about who you will be paying that money to.

Multitasking is made easy by the tablet’s operating system, a version of the Android OS dubbed “Froyo.” You should be able to listen to Mp3s, keep your GPS data current, and be given notice of different things through the system’s notification service without being forced to keep any specific app open and running. Friends and business contacts will constantly be able to reach you on your Dell tablet because it lets you access your email acounts, including Gmail, quite easily.

Video chat was not present in the first iPad offering, and it’s terrific that it is with this Dell tablet. This tablet, utilizing Qik software and a front-facing panel cam, lets you video chat. The only catch is that the only ones you can chat with are people who have a Dell Streak tablet or a compatible device. So there isn’t a universal video chat feature available. The built-in On Demand service provided by Blockbuster is a plus for this Dell tablet. Admittedly, however, Blockbuster’s recent difficulties have made us think twice about recommending the tablet.

Reviews right now are only a handful, but it does seem that most people are wary as to the reasons why this tablet was developed. It isn’t an extensive device – it can’t communicate between non Streak-compatible devices so its functionality is rather limited. Notwithstanding, a strong desire for a tablet computer coupled with a limited budget may make this tablet a perfect way to familiarize yourself with the technology. Just make sure you know what you are buying before you actually send your money to Dell.
