Listening is something most IELTS test-takers struggle with. To think about it, it can be quite challenging. Every section in Listening is designed to test you for different skills.

Let’s look at some IELTS listening tips that can help you get a higher band score:

  1. Understand the test pattern

In Section 1 of IELTS General Listening, you can expect a question consisting of a recording of a telephonic or even face to face conversation. The nature of the conversation is that of an enquiry. It could have a conversation involving tour operation, vacation planner etc. In the conversation, you can expect questions and answers from the people involved.

You will get a table with blanks that you have to fill going by the suggested word count. In the fill in the blanks section, you can hope for simple questions with low difficulty level, in which you have to fill in the necessary information.

In Section 2, you will come across instruction-based details. You will have to find matching information, and then fill them in the blanks matching the stated word count.

Further, in Section 3 of IELTS Listening, you will listen to a discussion that is taking place between a group of people. The level of questions is more complicated, and the discussion could be based on something academic.

Finally, in Section 4, you will hear parts of a lecture that will constitute complex phrases and vocabulary. The lecture will be from a professor or an academician. The speaker could be talking on something current, or even scientific discovery. So, you will be adjudged on how well you can understand the central idea, and take questions.

  1. Writing the Answers

In the answer sheet, your answers could be in the form of alphabets, names, numbers of other required information within the stipulated word limit. Be sure that you write the right answers under the right question numbers.

It is advised that you use a pencil to write the answers, instead of a pen. This will help you erase spelling mistakes later. Use uppercase while answering questions.

  1. Practice with different types of audios

To get comfortable with different accents and vocabularies, practice by listening to TED talks, English language radio channels, podcasts, English news, and other material. This will help you get accustomed.

Use different audios for practice

  1. Boost your concentration

Improve your concentration by listening to shorter audios at first, and then moving on to longer audios. Working on improving your attention spans is essential. You have to train your mind to concentration on the audio.

Now consider this: you have to read the question, listen for the answer, and then write it down without any mistakes—all at the same it. There is only one way to accomplish all this—practice.

In general, you will get about 30 seconds between two answers. Use this time to read the next question and prepare for it.
