Nights are drawing in, and cold waves have begun to flow. Now is the time for fun activities like ice fishing and ice skating, but it also brings infectious diseases along with it. Cold, sore throat, cough, and sneezing are very common in the winter. Even though you wrap yourself in multiple layers, you can come down with the flu. 

Immunity plays a paramount role to prevent you from infections. Have you ever noticed that some people fall ill more frequently despite keeping their body warm throughout the season? This all happens because of healthy immunity. Winter is around the corner, and hence you should be careful with your food intake. Maintaining health is no picnic, but it is not rocket science either. Below are a few ways to help you stay fit during the winter season.

Focus on Hygiene

Food is essential to boost immunity, but it is not enough to prevent illnesses during the winter. 

1. Get Germs off your Hand

You do not realise how many times you touch the area around your eyes, nose, and mouth. Infection usually spreads when you expose yourself to dirt, dust, germs, and bacteria. Since you perform all of the tasks with your hands, they are the abode of germs and bacteria. Wash them after you have fulfilled your task. 

Sometimes people do not wash their hands before and after eating a meal. You should not commit this mistake. Eating without washing hands means you are taking in germs orally. After the outbreak of the pandemic, it has become more essential to wash your hands frequently. If water is not available around you, sanitize your hands. However, washing your hands with soap will be better.  

2. Cover Yourself

Cold temperature means increased infectious diseases like cold and cough. Respiratory problems spread widely, and children and senior citizens are more prone to such issues because of low immunity. The best way to keep such problems at bay is to cover yourself with warm clothes. 

Make sure that you wear jackets and sweaters to block air outside. Respiratory problems generally arise when cold waves hit your chest. Make sure that you keep your body warm. Cover your ears with a cap and wear gloves to prevent your fingers from being swollen. 

Follow a Healthy Lifestyle

Your lifestyle will have a direct impact on your health. Missing meals and a sedentary lifestyle can take a toll on your overall health.

  • Include a healthy diet

A diet plays a crucial role to maintain your physical and mental health. It is essential to boost the immunity that prevents you from infectious diseases like cold, cough, sore throat, and the like. 

  • Eat fruit and vegetables every day. Make sure that you eat seasonal vegetables. Green leafy vegetables and carrots are an ideal choice to boost your immunity. Make veggie soup to ensure that you get all of the nutrients. 
  • Try to avoid processed food like cookies sugary drinks. 
  • You should eat nuts as they are a healthy munching option. They are loaded with vitamins and minerals, far better than cookies that consist of nothing but empty calories.  
  • Do not forget to consume dairy products like milk and cheese. If you are not so young, you should prefer low-fat cheese and skimmed milk. 
  • Increase your water intake. This will keep your body hydrated. Dry cold waves make your skin and lip flaky. You often do not feel thirsty and hence reduce the water intake, but you should drink at least seven to eight glasses of water because your body needs this much water to stay hydrated. 
  • Avoid alcohol, soda, and caffeinated drinks because they lead to dehydration. 
  • Get plenty of sleep

Adequate sleep is a must to keep your body healthy. Nowadays, people have become workaholics and work the whole day and night. This is also one of the reasons for falling sick too often. An adult should get sleep between seven to eight hours.

 Try to set a schedule for your sleep. Go to your bed daily at the same time, so your body knows the right time to sleep. Of course, when you are ill, you will feel torpid and want to sleep more. Do not resist it because sleep will help you recuperate quickly.  

  • Be physically active

Just because you are more sluggish because of the winter season, it does not mean you will avoid exercising. Aim to perform an exercise at least for 30 minutes. You do not need to go to the gym. 

Brisk walk and jogging are enough to improve your physical strength. Go to the park in early morning hours so you can breathe in the fresh air. It will remove pollutants stuck in your nose and lungs.
